Customer Review: Three basic rules plus some spice and sass

Start with three basic rules:
1. Get your background colors and wall and window treatments in place
2. Next, add the large ticket furniture items.
3. Finally, throw in a few (emphasis on FEW) key accessories.
Okay, so that's the basic premise and you really can't go wrong if you stay focused on these key features. After that, you can "tinker" with the rules to fit your own style.
What makes this book work so well are several things: color photos that show how the basics can be varied, depending on room and designer, updated styles and a solid premise. A lot of bang for the buck!

Customer Review: Sent Wrong Book

I was dissatified with my order. First it came three weeks late and when it did arrive it was the wrong book! Never again!

Customer Review: A great step-by-step teaching guide to decorating your home

This book starts with the sewing basics that many of us may not have been interested in learning until we actually had our own place that needed to be decorated. So, if you don't know the first thing about sewing, but would like to learn you may want to purchase this book. I think it has the best sewing instructions of any book that I've ever seen before. Or, if you want to know the proper way to wallpaper, paint or set tiles, the instructions are all here. The excellent attention given to detail, and the clear pictures makes this one of the very best practical teaching guides on the market today. There are chapters on Curtains, Shades, Bedding, Cushions, Simple Upholstery, Tiling, Table Linen, Lampshades, Painting, Wallpapering, Lighting and Houseplants. The directions are concise and the photographs show all of the projects step-by-step. This book is so good that I've purchased two to use as gifts.

Debbie Travis’ Decorating Solutions: More Than 65 Paint and Plaster Finishes for Every Room in Your Home

Wherever you live, chances are there are a few things about your home you'd like to change. As best-selling author and television host Debbie Travis points out in her introduction, "Decorating is an ongoing process. Each time you change your address, or even if you stay in the same place, the process of adapting your home to suit your changing moods and needs is constant, because, in truth, no room is perfect." But often we look around at a new home with large expanses of white walls, or someone else's color scheme, or an apartment that hasn't been painted in years, and we simply don't know where to start. In Debbie Travis' Decorating Solutions, Travis has gathered together her best ideas for solving the most common decorating dilemmas plaguing homeowners and renters alike.

The book begins with a valuable outline of the proper steps for preparing a variety of surfaces and gives a complete rundown on paints, glazes, plaster, sealants, and materials, including helpful descriptions of different tools and basic instructions on stenciling, block painting, and plastering. Next, because working with color can be intimidating at first, a section on color will help you choose the right one for your needs. Then, taking the commonsense approach of accentuating the positive and camouflaging the negative, Travis offers imaginative solutions to problems ranging from cracked walls to damaged floors, from outdated kitchen cabinetry to dreary bathroom tiles. Included are ideas and complete step-by-step instructions for more than 65 different paint, plaster, and paper finishes for transforming walls, floors, ceilings, doors, fireplaces, bathrooms, kitchens, hallways, and staircases, all without the fuss of major renovation.

Lavishly illustrated with more than 400 full-color photographs and packed with practical information, Debbie Travis' Decorating Solutions is an inspiration for anyone who wants to bring out the best in a home.

Customer Review: She Sticks to One Style

This book is for people who like lots of color, and the shabby chic cottage type of look (painted furniture, painted hardwood floor, etc). I was hoping she would offer paint ideas for a wide array of decorating styles which she does not.
Check it out from your local library instead.

Customer Review: Not as good as some of her other books

I Enjoy watching Debbie on Painted Houses and Facelift. She is not afraid of color and seems to be able to decorate in various styles. I bought her Living Rooms book and think it is one of the best. This one is not up to par. Many of the projects use garish wall colors. I am not adverse to color - I have it all through my house, but I think many of her choices don't blend well and don't seem to complement each other.

This book might be okay for you if you like a funky/hip kind of decor, which a lot of the designs seemed to cover. There are some more sedate choices like the "leather walls" and the "colorwashed walls" which are quite beautiful. I would recommend her Facelift book and her Painted House Living and Dining Rooms.

Christmas All Through the House: Crafts, Decorating, Food (Better Homes and Gardens(R)) (Better Homes & Gardens)

A feature book for the holiday season.

Book-of-the-Month Club Feature Selection.

Captures the holiday spirit with hundreds of make-it-yourself crafts and decorating ideas.

Better Homes and Gardens kitchen-tested recipes from casual munchies to just-for-company dishes.

Customer Review: Not For Lazy Holiday Types Like Me

Admittedly, I'm a big holiday geek, and I thought I'd save some of the inevitable end-of-the-year indulgences in new decorations by actually making stuff myself. Cool stuff, with nails and tree branches and things. This book, it turns out, is pretty, but it's more about glue guns and glitter. The crafts are not particularly suited to sharing the creative impulse with children. It's for adults--among whom it seems I should not be counted. But, if you've got lots and lots of time to glue, this is your ticket, your flying carpet, your Great Holiday Testament.

Customer Review: A "must have" if you like to try a little bit of everything

This book has a place of honor in my collection of various craft books. It is packed full of absolutely gorgeous crafts that you would proudly show off in your home or give to your friends and loved ones. What I particularily liked about this book is the wide representation of different craft techniques from all (and I mean all) types of needleworks to working with gourds, floral crafts, folk art painting, food crafting etc. My main craft passions are crochet and floral crafting but as I already have many books for these two crafts, I was looking for something that dabbled in a little bit of everything and this book did not disappoint me. The stunning projects will inspire you to try your hand at other types of craft techniques no matter what craft you are most passionate about. If your creative passion is in the kitchen I must warn you though, that the recipes in this book are far outnumbered by the amount of craft projects. If you tend to serve your standard turkey and stuffing Christmas fare however, you will be pleased that the recipes here do not sway you to try something completely different but rather give you appetizer and dessert options as well as some crafty edible and non-edible food ideas to decorate your Christmas table. You will also find recipes that are suitable throughout the holiday season such as hot soups for warming up the kids after spending an afternoon outdoors or for preparing a Christmas morning buffet or a New Years Eve fare. Not only are there ideas of what to feed your guests there are also quite a few food gift ideas along with inspiring packaging projects such as country style jars and gift bags to show off your accomplisments. As for project skill requirements, there is so much diversity that there is definately something to suit every skill level. I beleive those that will benefit most from this book however, will be avid crafters that are interested in trying a little bit of everything...and if that's you...don't hesitate...buy the book!

Irreplaceable Artifacts: Decorating the Home with Architectural Ornament

The wonderful architectural details salvaged from 19th- and early-20th-century buildings are often readily available and frequently affordable. But many of us don't know quite how to use the iron grille work, wooden lintels, carved terra cotta, or other beautifully crafted items we find at antique shops, flea markets, garage sales, and salvage yards. This gorgeous volume by the owner of the renowned New York City store of the same name explains how to utilize all these rich rescued ornaments, often in inventive ways other than those originally intended. Column capitals, for instance, make terrific table bases; a wrought-iron gatepost becomes an elegant light fixture; stained-glass panels can be made into a room divider; an elaborate stone surround camouflages an ordinary stove hood. Many magnificently crafted stone, metal, or wood items succeed simply as dramatic sculptural pieces hung on the wall or set on a table. The joy of using these things, as we learn from this wonderful book, is threefold: they enhance our homes; they reduce the need to expend new resources and energy, since they recycle preexisting items; and they help to preserve our magnificent architectural heritage. Rather than being tossed into landfills (as was formerly the case), these elements can become part of our present, enriching our lives with the power of the past and lending a timelessness that graces the present. --Amy Handy

Customer Review: Need to Have!

This book is wonderfully put together, with great ideas and stunning photography. The book not only shows you fantastic architectural pieces, it tells you where they come from, the history of the building they were saved from, but also gives great suggestions on how to incorporate the pieces into your home. On top of all that, it is well written. Worth the price, and then some.
