Customer Review: Very informative

As always, Home Depot always make things so easy. I read about how to select paint and equipment/ technique. I ended hired a professional to do the job but at least I knew the right question to ask the painter and understand his procedures.

Customer Review: This Book + Your Creativity= Great Rooms!

As someone who has endlessly watched design shows like Trading Spaces and While You Were Out for ideas, I feel at a loss when it comes to actually making those projects happen. This book focuses on not so much design, but the "how to" on how make the projects happen. The book is filled with projects such as various moulding and painting techniques. One can get ideas for stenciling, tiling, wallpaper, windows, doors, etc... The beginning of the book give basic design styles and color schemes that usually go along with them. The projects are easy to follow. This book won't help you pick out a theme or interior design, but if you use your creativity and design ideas, you can make just about anything happen.

Graph paper and furniture cut-outs accommodate room layouts. With 3-ring square-back binder, this book measures 9'' wide x 9-1/2'' high. 80 pages.

Customer Review: Great gift for someone who is building or buying a new home!

I ordered 3 similar home organization books, because it was too difficult to tell which would be the best and Welcome Home: A Home Improvement and Decorating Organizer was the nicest of them all. The information that the book elicits and the graphics within the book make it a perfect gift!

Customer Review: Best Home Improvement Organizer out there!

I am a Real Estate Agent and when it comes to selecting gifts for my home buyers I only give gifts of quality that will last. I have purchased quite a variety of these books and returned most of them. When I received this one the first time I ordered it, I was relieved to finally have exactly what I had been looking for. I always write in the important information about the home on the first page and it includes a designated line for your real estate agents name as well. I will not buy any others. I always include this book along with many other essential items for the new home owner.

- Sections for bedrooms, baths, kitchen, dining room, living room, family room, and office
- Lifestyle questionnaire and budget worksheet for each room
- Graph and note paper
- Over 300 vinyl furniture stickers
- Laminated grid pages
- Pocket for inspirational photos and articles

Customer Review: Larger scale would be much better.

This is a very complete space planner, templates for all sizes and shapes of furniture, and quite a bit of advice on space planning. However, the scale used was just too small for comfortable use. I ended up using my own larger scale graph paper and made my own larger templates, which is what I've done for years. None of the space planners available use a large enough scale in my opinion. But this is a very complete book and guide -- providing you have 20-20 vision.

Customer Review: A must for anyone decorating their home!

When we purchased our first home we had a million things to purchase and plan out when it came to rooms. This workbook has nice large grid pages as well ad"budget sheets" to help you figure out how much you are spending on paint/accessories.

This book went everywhere with me from getting carpet estimates to picking up gallons of paint.

The book even has a few pages of pockets to hold inspiration pictures as well as plastic furniture pop outs in the back to use when planning.

In terms of all the work books of this type I looked at I was most happy with this simply designed medium sized one.

Customer Review: Good ideas

I enjoyed reading the book, it has several good photos of ideas used. It validates my decorating scheme!

Customer Review: Check it out of the library before buying

I agree the rusty chair/furniture and hospital guerny are not very appealing. This book is good for little tips and odds and ends but not as good as Better Homes "Cottage Style" book which I have to say is THE BEST. I am glad I checked it out of the library before I bought it. It went a little to over the top on the shabby chic/flea market look for me not very elegant. The pictures are good because of professional photos but I bet if you were in a home filled with some of this stuff it could end up looking a little too flea-ish. Check it out first at the library.

Customer Review: I expected more...:(

Quite uninspiring. The inside jacket and the foreward were the highlights of this book. I was unimpressed w/ most of the rooms, it seemed like it was put together quickly....certainly not one of my favorites. Many rooms looked unfinished to me. The book does look nice on my coffee table....that's about it.

The New Decorating with Pictures: Collecting Art and Photography and Displaying It in Your Home

Customer Review: A rewarding book but not the last word on displaying pictures

Making good pictures is difficult, but hanging them well sometimes seems to be equally challenging. I have a growing collection of nicely framed photographs that are standing around aimlessly because I can't make up my mind as to where exactly they fit on the walls of our house. That is why I turned to Stephanie Hoppen's book (which, surprisingly, is one of the very few on the subject.) Hoppen has sound credentials to speak authoritatively: she runs an art gallery in London, writes on interior decoration and has a son, Michael, who established one of London's most renowned photography galleries.

"The New Decorating with Pictures" is not about turning family pictures into kitchen clocks and shower curtains. The book has a double focus: it wants to help in building an art collection and in showcasing it tastefully in a homely setting. The discussion and examples are not limited to photographs only but to anything artistic that can be stuck to a wall (including paintings, drawings and mixed media works).

There are four main parts: "Choosing pictures", "Choosing subject", "Framing" and "Displaying". Clearly, Hoppen favours a thematic approach, where pictures are collected around a given subject matter. A significant part of the book is devoted to discussing and showing examples of art around four main themes: "people", "art & architecture", "the natural world", and "leisure". "The natural world", for example, divides further into subthemes such as landscapes, animals, gardens, etc. Personally I think this approach is a fairly weak point of the book - the more so as it takes up a significant number of pages - as many people will collect art because they like an artist or a medium, and not because they are looking for a thematic thread or a narrative in their collection.

Hoppen focuses the discussion in the "Framing" and "Displaying" section on two points: the material used to frame and display pictures and suitable proportions between the frame and the space around it. In terms of really practical advice, the discussion is fairly thin. Hoppen is reluctant to formulate hard and fast rules. Her main advice is: "get a specialist to help you out, or, if you want to do it yourself, try lots of things and have lots of patience."

Despite these shortcomings, the book is a pleasure to browse and read. Its real value lies in the many inspiring pictures of interiors that illustrate the first and last two sections of the book. There's an excellent mix of period, modernist and contemporary interiors, with corresponding styles of framing and displaying of paintings, drawings and photographs. The settings go beyond the living or dining room and include kitchens and bathrooms as well. It is rewarding to scrutinise these case studies as they encapsulate lots of experience and learning by their owners. Personally I find it exciting to see how a real picture of, say, Irving Penn or Michael Kenna finds its place on a wall. Hoppen's captions are instructive as they always mention all the artists that figure in a given setting.

All in all a rewarding book that lends itself to both casual browsing and a closer study of its rich collection of splendid interiors.

Customer Review: Chapters are arranged for quick consultation

Plenty of books provide advice on how to collect art and what to choose, but to few focus on display techniques appropriate for the home. The New Decorating With Pictures: Collecting Art And Photography And Displaying It In Your Home is the perfect item of choice for any who would collect art and photography and display it in a home, blending Simon Upton's fine color photo examples with Stephanie Hoppen's survey of techniques and common challenges. Divided by subject, chapters are arranged for quick consultation.

Christopher Lowell’s One-of-a-Kind Decorating Projects: Fast & Flexible Ways to Personalize Your Home

Do you want a designer look for your home—right now, for no money? Christopher Lowell hears you. The king of “let’s don’t and say we did” is at it again with more than fifty super-simple decorating tricks from the designer’s little black book. One glance and you’ll be inspired to make your home feel like you—modern, fresh, and in sync with today’s hypertasking lifestyle.

But who’s got time to make things from scratch? Christopher gets that, too. He’s done the work for you, scouring the mass-market stores in your neighborhood to find hidden gems you might have already passed by. With his ingenuity and award-winning designer’s eye, he shows you—step by step—how to use these conventional items in one-of-a-kind ways. The result is a home that looks totally custom designed for you. Are these projects easy? As Christopher says, “If you can get up, get dressed, put on makeup, do your hair, and drive in busy traffic, you are already overqualified to do the tasks in this book.”

These “chic cheats” are universal concepts that can be adapted to any home anywhere. Buy the drapes, then add a border. Use freestanding bookcases to create a sleeping niche that looks like a bedroom at
a five-star hotel. Turn a boring corner of the kitchen into a country bed-and-breakfast nook. Make a creative work center with a breezy, beachy feel out of an unused hallway. If Christopher can do it, so can you!
No project will take you more than a weekend, and in most cases you’ll spend only a few hours—that you’ll actually enjoy! Christopher tells you exactly what you need and where to get it, and provides cool variations to adapt any of the projects to your individual taste. Best of all, you can always depend on Christopher’s voice to keep you motivated in a way no other designer can.

So what are you waiting for? It’s never been easier to make the place you call home reflect your taste, style, and personality.

Nell Hill’s Decorating Secrets: Easy and Inspiring Ways to Bring Style into Your Home

In this handsome and accessible guide, popular decorating expert Mary Carol Garrity offers tips and ideas for re-creating her classic, relaxed style in the reader's own home.

Customer Review: a bit disappointing ...

I'm a big fan of the Nell Hill romantic style but I was a bit let down by this book. I am not a minimalist - I love this "romantic-eclectic" style, full of used, found, inherited and new objects.

I had hoped to see photos of whole rooms decorated in this style, but the book is only full of photos of sections of stairs and walls (with beautifully arranged mirrors and picture frames), sofas (with tons of different pillows), beds (again with tons of different pillows) and dozens and dozens of "tablescapes" and table settings and vignettes and collections of objects (sometimes more than a dozen, all of which will have to be picked up, dusted and put back each time you clean). The objects are interesting, varied, obviously cherished and the arrangements are artistically done, but there is no way to see the effect of an entire room decorated in this style. There are, however, two photos of baker's racks loaded with silver and blue and white china that are to die for .....

The "decorating secrets" are a few pages at the back of the book with lists of very predictable general instructions like "vary the heights", "mix it up", etc. No surprises or even detailed "how-to" here. Somehow there was very little that I could sink my teeth into. Disappointing.

Customer Review: Romantic decorating style

This modern romantic "style" book is wonderfully photographed. People familiar with Carol Garrity sometimes call this style: the NELL HILL STYLE. By the way, NELL HILL was Carol's grandmother (Carol's inspiration) .

This book is not an HOW TO Book but mostly an idea book and it shows how to decorate in a "romantic ,though modern, way". This romantic-style of decorating may not be for everybody, especially those that prefer a more "MASCULINE TOUCH". But for me....I just love it!

The photos are enchanting. There are some nice written tips on how to decorate, though this is more or less a visual decorating book.
